The first MiCD Symposium in Asia was held in Manila on 21 February 2010 at the New World Renaissance Hotel by the Philippine Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (PAED) and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA). The comprehensive scientific program highlighted the essence, various aspects and importance of adopting MiCD (Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry) where the participants were able to take home many valuable tips that would help to enhance the quality of their daily practice.

The event had an overwhelming response with an excited audience of 400 participants who obtained valuable CE credits and had the opportunity to become MiCD members through the PAED and advocate this new trend in Cosmetic Dentistry.

With the recent media hype on smile aesthetics and preservation of tooth structure, cosmetic dentistry is moving towards fulfilling the patient’s aesthetic demands with a more conservative treatment option to achieve the desired cosmetic outcome. Since Cosmetic Dentistry is not a speciality but an art which requires the vision and skill of the clinician to transform a smile beyond the patient’s expectations, MiCD is aimed at providing a holistic treatment approach with emphasis not only on aesthetics but also on the psychology, health and function of the patient.

The main benefits of adopting this phased treatment protocol which emphasizes on a conservative approach in Cosmetic Dentistry is that it focuses on preservation of sound tooth structure while still achieving the desired aesthetics, expands treatment options with novel restorative materials, promotes health, function and aesthetics of oral tissue. This new approach also reduces patient’s anxiety while increasing patient confidence. Additionally it promotes trust to enhance the professional image and adopts the “less is more” strategy.

Shofu Inc., being the event sponsor also showed the company’s commitment to support the MiCD movement through the contribution in developing and providing dental professionals with newer aesthetic biocompatible materials to achieve their goals.

Mr. Patrick Loke (Shofu’s General Manager for Asia-Pacific Region) said “ Shofu is proud to be the exclusive partner in the MiCD movement and we recognize the development of new clinical techniques in MiCD procedures. We are fully committed to support the MiCD movement through the contribution in developing and providing dental professionals with newer aesthetic biocompatible materials to achieve their goal.”

The symposium was followed by a gala dinner and the induction ceremony to install Dr. Sonny Burias as the 8th president of PAED for 2010-2012. Dr. S. Burias endorsed the MiCD mission which was to promote the awareness and benefits of Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry to all dental professionals and support their continuing education in adopting MiCD treatment procedures that preserve sound tooth structure while still achieving dramatic aesthetic results. He was proud to announce to the

gathering that this new concept will be advocated by PAED and incorporated into their CE programs during his term of service as the President.

On a lighter note the gala dinner was a James Bond themed event with Dr. S. Burias as 008. There was live performance on stage followed by the induction of the new executive committee and members of PAED.
